Riyadh Metro Line 3 – ANM Nine Elevated Stations

Riyadh · Saudi Arabia
Riyadh Metro Line 3 – ANM Nine Elevated Stations

Project Overview

Atlantis Contracting successfully delivered the fabrication, supply, and installation of custom architectural and structural metal works across nine elevated stations on Riyadh Metro Line 3, one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant and complex transportation infrastructure developments.

The scope comprised approximately 10,000 linear meters of SS316 stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized steel metal works, together with approximately 4,000 m² of zinc-coated galvanized steel sheet fabrication and installation.

All works were executed in accordance with approved shop drawings, project specifications, quality requirements, and the stringent HSE standards governing the Riyadh Metro programme. The completed systems were engineered to provide long-term durability, precision, and seamless integration with the architectural and structural design of each station.

Scope of Works

Atlantis Contracting was responsible for the complete delivery of the custom metal works package, including:

  • Site surveys and verification of structural interfaces and fixing conditions.
  • Preparation and submission of shop drawings and method statements.
  • Fabrication of custom SS316 stainless steel architectural elements.
  • Fabrication of hot-dip galvanized steel structural elements and support systems.
  • Fabrication and installation of zinc-coated galvanized steel sheet systems.
  • Precision cutting, forming, welding, finishing, and treatment of fabricated components.
  • Workshop quality control and pre-delivery inspections.
  • Transportation and coordinated delivery to nine active station sites.
  • Installation of metal works, cladding systems, architectural elements, and structural components.
  • Installation of associated support structures and fixing systems.
  • Coordination with structural, architectural, and MEP disciplines.
  • Final inspection, quality verification, documentation, and handover.

Site Conditions & Project Complexity

  • The project involved simultaneous works across nine elevated stations, each progressing at a different stage of structural and architectural completion. This required detailed station-by-station surveys, installation sequencing, and continuous coordination with other trades.
  • The elevated station structures also presented significant working-at-height, access, lifting, and material-handling requirements, while varying structural substrates—including concrete, structural steel, and composite elements—required tailored fixing and connection solutions.
  • In addition, the project was executed within an active construction environment where structural, MEP, and architectural activities were progressing concurrently. This required careful programme management to maintain installation productivity while avoiding clashes with other disciplines.

Key Project Challenges & Solutions

1. Large-Scale Fabrication Across Nine Stations

The simultaneous delivery of approximately 10,000 LM of custom metal works and 4,000 m² of sheet metal systems required strict control over procurement, fabrication, quality inspection, logistics, and installation sequencing.

Atlantis Solution:

A centralized fabrication and delivery programme was implemented, with production sequenced according to the installation readiness of each station. Workshop inspections were completed prior to dispatch, while critical components were strategically managed to maintain continuity of site operations.

2. Working at Height

The elevated nature of the stations required extensive installation activities at height under demanding project safety requirements.

Atlantis Solution:

Dedicated HSE procedures were implemented for elevated works, including certified scaffolding, access platforms, controlled lifting operations, approved rigging equipment, daily inspections, and toolbox talks prior to work commencement.

3. SS316 Surface Finish Protection

The high-quality architectural finish required for SS316 stainless steel demanded strict control during fabrication, transportation, and installation. Preventing contamination, scratches, and surface damage was critical to maintaining the specified appearance.

Atlantis Solution:

Stainless steel fabrication was performed under controlled workshop conditions with segregation from carbon steel operations. Stainless-steel-specific tools and handling procedures were adopted, while protective film and controlled packaging were maintained through transportation and installation. Final surface inspections were completed prior to handover.

4. Multi-Station Programme Coordination

Managing installation across nine stations, each with different access conditions, construction progress, and interface requirements, presented a significant coordination challenge.

Atlantis Solution:

A centralized project management structure was established, supported by station-specific supervision teams. Weekly progress reviews and rolling look-ahead programmes were used to coordinate manpower, materials, access, and installation priorities while proactively addressing potential programme conflicts.
